Onigumo's attachment to Kikyo is embedded in that soil. Apparently it opposes Naraku and protects Kikyo... The only one who can use Onigumo's burial soil is Kikyo.

KAG: The bird-wielder, Princess Abi, attacks the village. Standing in her way is Divine Hijiri, the one who destroyed Hakudoshi's barrier with an arrow... Could it be Kikyo?!
